Your contribution helps ensure that New Hampshire's civil legal aid providers - 603 Legal Aid and New Hampshire Legal Assistance - can make justice a reality for Granite Staters in crisis. For many people living in poverty, legal aid is the only pathway to keep their families safe and to access shelter, food, and healthcare.
With help from legal aid, clients can:
- Obtain a protective order that helps them leave an abusive partner
- Defend their rights when threatened with illegal evictions or foreclosures
- Successfully navigate complex systems to secure earned tax benefits
- Annul a criminal record or tax debt that bars them from opportunity
- Secure appropriate educational services for their children
- And so much more
Our civil legal aid programs - 603 Legal Aid and New Hampshire Legal Assistance - provide information, advice, and representation by expert staff attorneys and paralegals, aided by trained volunteer attorneys who provided pro bono services worth many thousands of dollars to low-income clients last year.
Annually, our programs receive more than 12,000 applications for help. They have no choice but to turn many - too many - away.
National and local assessments show that 12,000 applicants are just the tip of the iceberg; as many as 90% of people who face a civil legal problem don't have access to legal help when they need it because they don't know it exists or they don't know they have legal rights when their safety, homes, and livelihoods are on the line.
For 25 years, the NH Campaign for Legal Services has raised funds for legal aid to help close this justice gap.
